Our History

Lowger Bus Lines is an extension of the Spencer Bus Service started in the 1930s by the

late R. Melvin Spencer, who was one of the early pioneers of bus transportation in Antigua.

He can be easily described as the longest-serving bus operator in Antigua.

Melvin Spencer started off his career as a motor mechanic at a young age and in the late 1930s,

he began his bus business which he operated for over fifty years with the help of his wife and

children. When his business began to grow, he employed many bus drivers and conductors

and he trained several mechanics to work along with him, some of whom are leading ones on

the island, while others have migrated to take up top positions overseas. He served nearly all

of the bus routes on the island at that time.

In the early part of the 1950s, Spencer advanced the public transportation from wooden-type

open buses to British coaches/buses. These were used to complement the fleet of wooden buses

which were the only type used  in those days for public transportation. He always wanted to be

part of a properly regulated bus system on the island by importing more British service buses,

but officialdom then was not too supportive of this venture.

As the years passed, a shift from large service buses to vans that carry 14 passengers was

introduced by pirates who virtually deregulated the bus transportation system in Antigua. Melvin

always lamented the use of this type of equipment for public service since they were neither

constructed as nor intended to be public service vehicles.

As his health began to fail, Spencer could no longer be fully involved in the daily operation of his

business. His condition deteriorated and subsequently he passed away. He was an Icon in bus

transportation in Antigua.

One of Melvin’s sons decided to carry the Lantern and later renamed the business “Lowger Bus

Lines”, which is still a family business and now includes one of Melvin Spencer’s grandsons in

ownership and management.  Lowger’s operation is a little different, as, in addition to public

service, we specialize in contracts and private charters.

Lowger Bus Lines is now THE most experienced bus operation on the island
